Own trailer review: Insidious (2010)

.Name of film: Insidious
.Year released:2012
.Genre of trailer: Horror

In the Insidious trailer we see a family in their home which seems to be possessed. It often fades to black or a red screen which says the words 'Insidious is'. This screen is accompanied with a harsh noise which alone makes me jump. It then moves onto a fast montage of various people running, a woman performing some sort of exorcism and a scary image of a demonic figure.
One positive of this trailer is that it clearly sets the narrative without giving too much away. Throughout the beginning of the trailer we hear a ticking from a metronome. This ticking sounds like a heat beat and when this sound stops is when the fast montage takes place. To me it connotes that the heart has stopped as the individual is so scared. This trailer is also full of jump scares. The very last jump scare after the release date is the most effective one as it goes from complete silence to a loud screeching noise. This is a very good use of collision cutting.

On the other hand, after watching the movie I feel that this trailer only sets the narrative for the first half of the movie. As the movie goes on the story line changes quite a lot and it gets a bit far-fetched, what then happens later on in the movie is not shown in the trailer. If I had know the whole story before I watched the movie, I wouldn't have watched it.
Overall, I give this trailer a nine. It uses very good sound and being a highlights trailer we see many exciting parts of the movie. It also has many effective jump scares. The jump scare at the end has helped me decide to include one in my own trailer as it is the last thing the audience will see. This means it needs to be memorable so they then watch the movie when it is released.
