Audience research: Initial class poster and Class Poll
Below is the class horror poll that we conducted in October, 2012. It was carried out with 8 males and 9 females, and confirmed that females generally prefer psychological and action horrors, while males prefer gory horrors. The results were close, however, which suggests horror can appeal to both genders.
Choice of trailer
We have decided to a highlights trailer to incorporate all of the action, gore and psychological horror aspects. Our trailer contains all three as each member of our group has a different preference. Doing a highlights trailer will allow us to build up the action and suspense, include jumps to draw the audience in and to include body horror effects which would be seen throughout the movie.
We have also decided to make our trailer a ‘red band’ trailer as all the members of our group are females so we can show violence towards them. We can also use powerful effects to really shock the audience and make their toes curl. The video above is from the Evil Dead (2013) trailer. This trailer is a highlights trailer and shows the layout we want to do. It starts off slow and builds p to a fast montage of action shots. Within these shots we see the narrative of the film and we see various different body horror effects which really draws us in. The trailer ends slow with a shocking gore effect, which features a woman slicing her tongue.

Synopsis of our trailer
Three females (Abbie, Ria and Harriet) start off in an abandoned room in a college. In the room is a television with a news announcement saying it is the end of the world and that the dead are walking the earth. Harriet goes over to the window and rolls up the blind and there are two zombies starring through. The females then pick up the only weapons they can find and leave the room.
Whilst walking down the corridor zombies run down a corridor behind them, they all turn around and nothing is behind them. Whilst walking down the corridor zombies are running up to the windows, spitting blood on the window.
Half way through the trailer zombies start flooding in and Abbie dies. This is the turning point in the trailer where it starts to speed up and moves onto a fast montage. The fast montage will contain zombie kills, head splats, prosthetic wounds and a lot of running. After the fast montage three fade shots come one. One of Abbie dead on the floor, one of Harriet turning with a weapon and one of a close-up of a zombie kill. After this the title screen comes up with the name of the movie on it.
At the end of the trailer it cuts to Ria in the toilet clasping a weapon heavily breathing. Close-ups of the face with fear spread across it. Then after complete silence the door flies open and a zombie scream is all that can be heard. Then it fades to black saying ‘Coming soon’

Class Trailer 3: 30 Days of Night (2007)
.Name of film: 30 Days of Night
.Year released:2007
.Genre of trailer: Horror
In the 30 Days of Night trailer we see a small town get attacked by a group of fast moving monsters which I believe to be vampires. In the trailer it often fades to black showing a blank screen with writing on it setting the narrative of the film. This trailer shows a of action and a lot of deaths. One positive is the initial jump at the start, it is very effective. It is made by using collision cutting. It is all very quiet and then it suddenly cuts to an extremely loud, piercing noise thus resulting in a jump scare. The trailer also uses good building music and it clearly sets the narrative form the start without giving away too much of the film.
On the other hand, the trailer shows little gore. 30 Days of Night is a gory horror but the trailer does not show this. There are a few bits of restricted narration but such little body horror is shown. This will be due to the fact it is a green band trailer so it has to be suitable for all audiences. Another negative is the end of the trailer, another jump is needed to get the point across. Suspense is built but the is no delivery.
Overall I give this trailer an eight. This trailer has helped me decide that I will start my trailer with a jump scare so I hook the audience and then finish with one too as it will be the last thing they see. It will make the trailer more memorable.

Class Trailer 2: Toxic Avenger (1986)
.Name of film: Toxic Avenger
.Year released: 1986
.Genre of trailer: Comedy horror
In the trailer for Toxic Avenger we see the main character ‘Melvin’ get teased resulting in falling into nuclear waste. After the accident we see Melvin change into the toxic avenger. The trailer then goes on to show various bits of the film and Melvin killing various villains. This trailer is a highlights trailer. One positive about this trailer is that it makes the narrative clear straight away. This lets the audience know roughly what they are in for and if it appeals to them or not. This trailer also effectively sells that it is going to have some very strong body horror in it as we see two heads being smashed together in the trailer. On the other hand, this trailer contains no suspense. This can be quite off putting for a horror audience fan base as they like to be scared. It also shows too much of the film. I feel after watching the three and a half minute trailer I do not need to see the film as I know what happens throughout. Three and a half minutes is too long for a trailer especially for a ‘highlights’ trailer and the voice over constantly says ‘The Toxic Avenger’ which is very tedious and off putting towards then end. Overall I gave this trailer a six out of ten. It clearly sets the narrative but it is too long and shows too much of the film. This trailer has helped verify that I will not be using a voice over in my own trailer.

Class Trailer 1: Pusher Trilogy (2005)
Name of film: Pusher trilogy
Year released: 2005
Genre of trailer: Crime Thriller
This trailer is full of fast montages throughout. Within these montages there are clips of heavy drug use, violence, woman and sex. Between the montages it fades to black and writing appears on the screen which are reviews from various magazines etc. A positive of this trailer is the fast montages . When it is slowed down the images shown are quite grueling. As the montage is so fast it is uneasy and it is almost at subliminal speed. The trailer also contains collision cutting as it goes from slow to fast and it contains parallel music. The trailer also gets across the mood of the film. From the trailer we know it is going to be a grim, violent film. On the other hand it does fail to get across the narrative of the film. This may be due to another negative of that the trailer is that it is too short. Overall I gave the trailer an eight. It has helped me decide that I will use collision cutting and critique reviews in my trailer as they were used very effectively in this one but, I will not ‘cram’ anything in as it makes the trailer too short and doesn’t clearly set the narrative.
